Rafael Nadal out of Indian Wells and Miami – confirmed
Rafael Nadal will miss this year’s Sunshine Double through injury
22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will not compete at either Indian Wells or Miami next month.
The Spaniard has been troubled by ongoing injury issues in recent months, and has not played on tour since his loss at the Australian Open in January. After his second-round exit in Melbourne, he announced that he had suffered a leg problem.
And on Tuesday, the Indian Wells tournament confirmed that he would be absent from an event he has won three previous times, with a press release including a statement from director Tommy Haas: “We wish Rafa continued healing, and hope to see him back at the BNP Paribas Open next year.”
Shortly afterwards, Nadal himself took to social media to post a video of his ongoing rehab, and added that he would also not be at the Miami Open.
“I am sad that I won’t be able to compete at Indian Wells nor Miami. Very sad not to be there,” he wrote. “I’ll miss all my US fans but I hope to see them later this year during the summer swing.”
Nadal’s injury problems have been mounting up in recent months, from his foot injury that required injections to get him through Roland-Garros last year through his abdominal tear that forced him out of Wimbledon.
He looks set to drop out of the ATP Top 10 for the first time since April 2005 – almost 18 straight years. He reached the final of Indian Wells last year and will be unable to defend any of those points accumulated.
