Fils reaches first Masters 1000 quarter-final by defeating Giron at Indian Wells

Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 20 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells Masters by winning against American Marcos Giron 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Tuesday.
Fils faced stern opposition from Giron as the duo battle for an hour, 50 minutes.
The Frenchman eventually prevailed on the back of four aces, three break-point conversions and 27 winners.
Fils, ranked No 21, will face the winner of the match between American Tommy Paul, the No 10 seed, and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed, next. It will be his first quarter-final appearance on the Masters 1000 level.
“I’m just fighting, trying to find a way during every match,” Fils told the press later on Tuesday. “For now, it’s working, so pretty happy about it. I knew I had to put much more intensity because when I get back at 3-1, he was playing a bit faster than me. He was moving me around and was tough for me. So I said, ‘Okay, third set, you go full, you hit all the first serve, you put a lot of kick in the second serve and all the forehand, you kill it, maybe it’s out sometime, but at the end, more in than out.”
Earlier in the tournament, the 20-year-old Frenchman beat Canadian lucky loser Gabriel Diallo (6-2, 6-2) and Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 15 seed (3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3).
Giron, ranked No 48, defeated Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili (7-5, 7-6 (3)), Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 4 seed (7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2) and Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 26 seed (5-7, 6-3, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Indian Wells Tennis Masters.
