“I won’t be Sinner’s fan…I probably won’t watch the match” – Djokovic spending Turin time with his children
Novak Djokovic has no plans to become Jannik Sinner’s No 1 fan on Thursday
Novak Djokovic needs Jannik Sinner to beat Holger Rune if he is to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals – but he won’t be cheering him on.
The Italian was the man who snapped the world No 1’s unbeaten streak earlier in the week in Turin, and now Djokovic’s fate lies in his hands. If Rune beats Sinner on Thursday evening, then Djokovic will not be through to the last four of the competition.
That does not, however, mean that the Serb will be watching the match.
“No, I will not be his fan,” said Djokovic in response to a question harking back to Alexander Zverev’s comments about Daniil Medvedev in a similar situation. “If he wins, I’ll qualify. If he doesn’t, I’ll still finish the season with a win and look to Davis Cup.”
Djokovic: I’m only thinking about hugging my kids
Reflecting on his three-set win over Hubert Hurkacz, he added: “I was focused to win the match, so I did. The outcome of tonight’s match is not in my hands, so… That’s it. I’m really not thinking about it. I’m just thinking about hugging my kids at the moment.”
The 36-year-old said that he was intending to go for dinner with his children, saying: “I probably won’t see the match. Just follow the score.”
