“I should have pulled out” says Rune after Marozsan loss
Holger Rune explains he wasn’t feeling well ahead of his clash with Fabian Marozsan, and admits he should have withdrawn from the match earlier
World No 57 Fabian Marozsan sent shock waves through the Miami Open when he thrashed sixth seed Holger Rune 6-1, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in Miami.
While Marozsan has built something of a reputation as a giant-killer over the past 12 months, Rune has since posted on social media to say that he believes he should have withdrawn ahead of the match.
“Unfortunately this was the end of the Miami Open [for me],” said Rune just hours after his loss to Marozsan on Sunday. “I knew I wasn’t feeling 100% well today but I didn’t imagine my energy level would be so low.”
“Looking back I should’ve pulled out. But it’s always difficult because I had been preparing and wanting to play for a week. Time to go back to Europe. Thanks for the support Miami.”
The loss was Rune’s worst-ever result on the ATP Tour, and sees a good run of form well and truly squashed, after the Dane made the semi-finals of Acapulco and quarter-finals in Indian Wells.
