Hurkacz cruises past Martinez to win the Estoril Open
Hubert Hurkacz beat Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-4 to lift the first clay-court title of his career and his first ATP title of the season
Hubert Hurkacz was in clinical form as he confidently dispatched Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-4 to win the Estoril Open.
It is the first ATP title of the season for the Pole, and the first clay-court title of his career.
A single break in the fourth game of the first set was enough for Hurkacz to seal the opener, taking it with a confident hold to love over his Spanish opponent.
The world No 10 then broke in the opening game of the second set to gain a firm grip on the final, before holding serve for the remainder of the set to earn a confident victory and win a maiden clay-court title.
“I want to thank my team. I really appreciate you guys,” Hurkacz said during his winner’s speech.
“Even in the tough moments you still stick with me. That’s really amazing. I want to thank my family, they’ve always supported me since I was a kid. It really means a lot to me. Thank you so much for that.”
In the previous rounds of the Estoril tournament, Hurkacz, ranked No 10, defeated qualifier Jan Choinski (7-6 (5), 6-4), Spanish qualifier Pablo Llamas Ruiz (7-6 (4), 6-4) and Chilean Cristian Garin (6-3, 3-6, 6-3).
Martinez, ranked No 77, beat German Daniel Altmaier (6-4, 6-2), Roberto Bautista Agut (7-5, 6-4), French lucky loser Richard Gasquet (6-4, 6-4) and Norwegian Casper Ruud, the top seed (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
