Australian Jordan Thompson, the No 6 seed, moved into the second round of the Houston Open by beating Chinese qualifier Yibing Wu 6-4, 6-4 at River Oaks Country Club on Wednesday night.
Thompson, ranked No 33, will play American Aleksandar Kovacevic next.
