Holger Rune defeats Sonego to advance in Rotterdam

Dane Holger Rune, the No 5 seed, advanced to the second round of the Rotterdam Open by beating Italian Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (4), 6-4 at the Rotterdam Ahoy on Tuesday night in a well-played match that saw the Dane put forth some spellbinding tennis.

Rune improved to 3-0 lifetime against his Italian foe, and notched his 44th indoor win since the start of 2022, which is second on the ATP Tour in that span. He created 13 break points over the course of the two hour and 11-minute contest, converting two.

Rune, ranked No 14, will play Pedro Martinez Portero next.
