“His physical condition was greatly interfering with his emotional state” – Safina on Medvedev in Turin
The former world No 1 believes Medvedev was completely gassed out at the season-ending ATP Finals
Former women’s world No 1 Dinara Safina believes that countryman Daniil Medvedev needs to take some time off to recharge himself before the start of the new season.
Safina, who was at the ATP Finals in Turin where she covered the tournament for television, said that Medvedev looked completely exhausted at the season-ending event, which also impacted his level of play and mental state.
“I had only one observation about Daniil in Turin – he was so tired. I think he didn’t care about the tournament anymore,” Safina said as quoted by Tennis365.
“I had one desire, to say: ‘Dan, take a rest, hang up your racket. Until you feel like training again, don’t even pick it up.’
Daniil just needs to rest. Two wins, and you become the best version of yourself again..
Safina added that the 28-year-old Russian would be keen to add a second Grand Slam title to his resume but noted that a lot of things would need to fall into place for that to happen.
“His physical condition was greatly interfering with his emotional state. So Daniil just needs to rest. Two wins, and you become the best version of yourself again, and Daniil plays well, he hasn’t lost anything in the game.”
“I’m sure Medvedev still wants to win a second Grand Slam. Now, however, there are a lot of people who want to – the stars have to align.”
