“He’s an inspiration of mine” – Medvedev sad about impending Murray retirement
Earlier this week, Murray revealed that he does not plan to play much beyond this summer
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev admits he would be sad to see former world No 1 and three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray hang up his racquets when the Brit eventually retires.
Earlier this week after losing in the second round in Dubai, Murray revealed that he doesn’t not intend to play much past this summer but did not give more specifics.
Medvedev and Murray have clashed three times on the tour, between 2019 and 2023, with the Russian winning all three of their encounters.
“First of all, he’s a fun guy, a great guy to be around. That’s always a great quality in life,” the Russian said in Dubai where he is through to the semi-finals. “For sure he’s an inspiration of mine because I remember when I was just going up the rankings, that’s the moment when he was winning Slams, playing finals against Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic. So the Big Four.”
(When) he’s not here, I’m sure he’s going to find a good spot in his life after tennis.

Medvedev was confident Murray would find happiness when he eventually retires from the sport, knowing how hard the Brit has worked to comeback from his hip surgeries.
“It’s going to be sad when he retires. Even I’m definitely not sure that he’s going to stop this year. Wimbledon is a big tournament, maybe Wimbledon and then stop. But while he’s here, it’s going to be fun. (When) he’s not here, I’m sure he’s going to find a good spot in his life after tennis,” he added.
