“He would be one of the most exciting guys” – Mouratoglou reveals who he’d love to coach
Patrick Mouratoglou believes he understands Nick Kyrgios, and would love to coach the Australian
News this week has been that Patrick Mouratoglou and Holger Rune are reunited, with the high-profile tennis coach and world No 7 reconnecting for the third time in the past 18 months.
Naturally, this commitment means that Mouratoglou will have his hands full on the coaching front for the foreseeable future. However, if it wasn’t for the partnership with Rune, the Frenchman has revealed one player he would love to coach in the future.
“I think he would be one of the most exciting guys to coach,” declared Mouratoglou on his Instagram channel, when asked what he thought of partnering with the Australian.
Could we see Kyrgios x Mouratoglou in the future?
Mouratoglou’s declaration that he’d love to work with Kyrgios came with one important caveat.
“The thing is, for someone to have a coach, he needs to want it,” cautioned Mouratoglou. “You cannot work with a player who doesn’t want a coach. So that will be his decision one day, or maybe never, we’ll see.”
As the founder of the Mouratoglou Academy in France, Mouratoglou spent a decade coaching Serena Williams. Throughout this time, he was able to be courtside for many of Kyrgios’ matches, and believes that he understands what makes the 28-year-old tick.
“This guy has an incredible potential,” explained Mouratoglou. “He’s complicated, he’s complex. Sometimes I think I’m not even sure he understands himself, but I think from the side watching him for so many years, I think I understand him.
“I mean I’m not the only one probably, but I can feel him. I think there are a lot of very smart things to do with him a Grand Slam or more.”
So will we see a Mouratoglou and Kyrgios partnership in the future? Considering it’s been over a year since the Aussie last took the court, and Mouratoglou has just committed to a partnership with a top 10 player, it’s unlikely.
But you never know.
