Hamburg Open: Zverev through to final against Fils
The German defeated Spain’s Pedro Martinez 6-2, 6-4 in the semi-finals in front of his home fans
German Alexander Zverev, the top seed, beat Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6-2, 6-4 to reach the final of the Hamburg Open at the Rothenbaum Tennis Center on Saturday evening.
This was the first meeting between the two players. Zverev, ranked No 4, will face Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 5 seed, next. He has a 2-0 edge over Fils in head-to-head, including a win in this tournament at the semi-final stage last year.
The German is through to the 35th ATP final of his career and his eighth on home soil. Zverev won against Dutch qualifier Jesper De Jong (6-2, 6-2), Frenchman Hugo Gaston (4-6, 6-2, 7-5) and Chinese Zhizhen Zhang, the No 8 seed (6-4, 6-3) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Martinez, ranked No 49, defeated Italian Matteo Arnaldi, the No 6 seed (7-6 (4), 6-1), French qualifier Ugo Blanchet (6-4, 0-6, 7-5) and Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 4 seed (1-6, 6-1, 6-4).
