German wildcard Maximilian Marterer edged out SoonWoo Kwon 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Hamburg Open at the Rothenbaum Tennis Center on Monday.
Marterer, ranked No 108, will play No 4 seed Francisco Cerundolo next.
