Fognini becomes first Italian to win 400 ATP matches but has a run-in with Bedene
Fabio Fognini defeated Aljaz Bedene in a third set tiebreaker and will play Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 7 seed, in the next round
Italian Fabio Fognini moved into the second round of the Hamburg Open by edging out Slovenian Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) at Am Rothenbaum on Tuesday.
With the win, Fognini became the first Italian in the Open era to win 400 matches. He also becomes only the 14th active player on the ATP Tour to reach that milestone.
Now ranked 61 in the world, Fognini will face Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 7 seed, in the next round.
Fognini and Bedene exchange more than a few words at the net
However, Fognini’s win was overshadowed by a run-in with his opponent Bedene at the end of their match. The Slovenian was apparently upset over Fognini showing wrong marks to be checked during their close contest.
Fognini, who now owns a 400-352 win-loss record, has now scored 10 wins in 11 career meetings over Bedene.
