Hamburg Open: Fils into semi-finals as Rune retires with knee injury
Arthur Fils benefited from the retirement of Holger Rune (6-4, 4-1) and will play Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 3 seed, in the next round
Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 5 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Hamburg Open when Dane Holger Rune, the second seed, retired with a knee injury at the Rothenbaum Tennis Center.
Fils, ranked No 28, led 6-4, 4-1 when Rune called time on the match.
The injury is a worry for the Dane with the Olympics just one week away, but the hope will be that this was precautionary more than anything else.
The 20-year-old Frenchman, who was playing very well until the sudden end to the match, will play Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 3 seed, next.
In the previous rounds of the Hamburg tournament, Arthur Fils won against Spaniard Jaume Munar (5-7, 6-3, 6-1) and Serb Laslo Djere (7-6 (3), 6-2).
The 21-year-old Dane beat Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (6-4, 6-4) and Argentinian qualifier Marco Trungelliti (6-4, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
