Sinner wins third straight three-setter to reach semis in Halle

World No 1 Jannik Sinner edged out German Jan-Lennard Struff 6-2, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (3) to move into the semi-finals of the Halle Open at the Owl Arena/Gerry-Weber-Stadion on Friday evening.

Sinner, ranked No 1, will face the winner of the match between Chinese Zhizhen Zhang and American Christopher Eubanks next. It’s the seventh tournament out of seven this year in which the Italian has made the semi-finals, or better.

The 22-year-old Italian defeated Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-2) and Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3) ahead of his victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Struff, ranked No 41, edged out Italian Luciano Darderi (6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-6 (10)) and won against Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 6 seed (6-4, 6-4).
