Hurkacz advances to semi-finals in Halle, set to rise to career-high ranking of No 7
Hubert Hurkacz won against Marcos Giron 7-6 (5), 6-4 on Friday and will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Arthur Fils and German Alexander Zverev, the second seed, in the next round
Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 5 seed, won against American Marcos Giron 7-6 (5), 6-4 to move into the last four of the Halle Open at the Owl Arena/Gerry-Weber-Stadion on Friday.
Hurkacz, ranked No 9, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Arthur Fils and German Alexander Zverev, the second seed, next.
The Pole is now guaranteed to rise to at least No 7 – a new career-high – when the rankings are updated on Monday.
The Pole defeated Italian Flavio Cobolli (7-5, 7-6 (2)) and Australian qualifier James Duckworth (7-6 (3), 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Halle tournament, Giron, ranked No 53, won against Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 4 seed (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and Italian Matteo Berrettini (3-6, 6-4, 6-3).
