“Great feeling to finally get my full strength in the shots back” – Thiem finding his feet again
Thiem wins back-to-back matches for the first time since Madrid 2021
It had been a tough first six months of the season for Dominic Thiem. From pulling out of the Australian Open and delaying his return to failing to win a match in the first seven events of his comeback and then pulling out of Wimbledon to get into better shape.
But on Thursday, the former world No 3 looked more like the player who was once the biggest threat to the Big 3 as he scored an upset win over world No 20 Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round of the Bastad Open.
Thiem ended his losing streak last week at the ATP Challenger in Salzburg and then won his first ATP level match in the first round this week with a win over Emil Ruusuvuori 3-6, 6-1, 7-6. On Thursday, Thiem defeated Bautista Agut 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 to score his first back-to-back win since Madrid in 2021.
Understandably, Thiem was delighted after his win and later tweeted that he felt great to finally have the full strength behind his shots.
“I’m so happy with my win today against a top opponent. It’s a great feeling to finally get my full strength in the shots back. I still need to improve a couple of things in my game, but overall I’m very happy with my progress! Tomorrow I will give 100% and try to increase my level once more! Thank you all for the support.”
Thiem will meet eighth seed Sebatisan Baez for a place in the semi-finals. This will be the first meeting between the two players.
