Korda outlasts Murray to reach semi-finals at Gijon Open
Sebastian Korda won against Andy Murray 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 on Friday evening and will play Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in the next round
American Sebastian Korda ended the title hopes of former world No 1 Andy Murray at the Gijon Open on Friday as he claimed a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory to reach the semi-finals at the Palacio de Deportes.
Murray, looking for his first title since 2019, ripped through the second set but Korda rebounded to take the third. The world No 47 will play Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, who saved nine match points in his quarter-final, next.
The 22-year-old American beat Spaniard Jaume Munar (6-4, 6-1) and edged out Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, the No 3 seed (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Murray, ranked No 48, won against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 6 seed (7-5, 6-2) and edged out Argentinian Pedro Cachin (2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3)).
