American Marcos Giron upset the No 8 seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas, of Spain, in three sets to move into the second round of the Gijon Open at the Palacio deportes on Tuesday afternoon.
Giron, who reached his first ATP final in San Diego last month, won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and three minutes.
Giron aiming for revenge for 2021 Madrid loss against Thiem next
The American, ranked No 62 in the world, will play former world No 3 Dominic Thiem, of Austria, next. Thiem won his first round match on Monday in straight sets.
The pair have met once in the past, with Thiem winning their round of 32 clash in Madrid last year in straight sets.
