Ruud outlasts Baez, joins Djokovic in Geneva semi-finals
Casper Ruud held off Sebastian Baez in three sets during quarter-final action at the Geneva event on Thursday. Ruud is through to the semi-finals along with Flavio Cobolli, Novak Djokovic and Tomas Machac.
Casper Ruud, the second seed, edged out Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, the No 5 seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to secure a semi-final spot the Geneva Open at Tennis Club de Genève, Parc des Eaux-Vives on Thursday night.
Ruud, ranked No 7, will face Italian Flavio Cobolli next. The Norwegian remains on a collision course for the title match with top seed Novak Djokovic, who beat Tallon Griekspoor in the quarters and will now go up against Tomas Machac.
In the previous round of the Geneva tournament, Ruud defeated Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner (4-6, 6-2, 6-2).
Baez, ranked No 20, earned his place in the last eight at the expense of India’s Sumit Nagal (7-6 (7), 6-3) and Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena (6-3, 6-0).
