Machac fends off Michelsen in Geneva quarter-finals

Tomas Machac scraped past Alex Michelsen in straight sets on Thursday in Geneva. Machach will face either Novak Djokovic or Tallon Griekspoor in the semi-finals.

Tomas Machac secured a semi-final spot at the Geneva Open by beating American Alex Michelsen 6-3, 7-6 (2) at Tennis Club de Genève, Parc des Eaux-Vives on Thursday evening.

Machac, ranked No 44, will face the winner of a quarter-final contest between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the No 6 seed.

The Czech previously defeated No 8 seed Jack Draper (7-6 (6), 6-1) and American qualifier Nicolas Moreno De Alboran (4-6, 7-5, 6-0) ahead of his victory over Michelsen.

Earlier in the tournament, Michelsen, ranked No 65, edged out qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) and No 3 seed Taylor Fritz (6-4, 4-6, 7-5).
