Geneva Open: Sousa sets up semi-final clash against Gasquet
João Sousa won against Ilya Ivashka in straight sets on Thursday evening and will play Richard Gasquet in the next round
Portuguese Joao Sousa reached the semi-finals of the Geneva Open by defeating Belarusian Ilya Ivashka 7-5, 7-5 at Tennis Club de Genève, Parc des Eaux-Vives on Thursday evening.
Joao Sousa, ranked No 79, will play French veteran Richard Gasquet in the semi-finals.
Earlier in the tournament, the 33-year-old Portuguese won against Spaniard Pablo Andujar (6-1, 6-4) and Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, the No 5 seed (6-4, 6-3).
Ivashka, ranked No 50, had defeated American Marcos Giron (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 3 seed (6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3) in the previous rounds.
Second seed Casper Ruud will take on fourth-seeded American Reilly Opelka in the other semi-final.
