Griekspoor overcomes Shapovalov to set up Djokovic meeting in Geneva
Tallon Griekspoor came back from Wednesday’s rain delay to beat Denis Shapovalov in three sets on Thursday in Geneva. Griekspoor will face world No 1 Novak Djokovic later in the day.
Tallon Griekspoor came back from a set and 3-0 down in the second to defeat Denis Shapovalov 6-7 (7), 7-6 (4), 6-3 in round two of the Gonet Geneva Open at Tennis Club de Genève, Parc des Eaux-Vives on Thursday afternoon.
They were back on serve in the second when rain halted play on Wednesday. Not quite 24 hours later, Griekspoor had the momentum when the match resumed. The Dutchman took the second set in a tiebreak and used an immediate break in the third to make for the final difference.
Griekspoor, who beat Chris Eubanks 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in his opening match this week, will be back for quarter-final competition on Thursday against top-ranked Serb Novak Djokovic.
In the previous round of the Geneva tournament, Shapovalov, ranked No 123, got the best of Argentina’s Federico Coria (7-5, 6-0).
