Berrettini holds off Gaston for Kitzbuhel title
Matteo Berrettini won the final on Saturday against Hugo Gaston.
Italian Matteo Berrettini beat Frenchman Hugo Gaston 7-5, 6-3 to win the Generali Open trophy at Kitzbühel Tennis Club in Kitzbuhel on Saturday afternoon.
The victory gave the Italian back to back titles, having also won in Gstaad, and his third of 2024. Berrettini will return to the world’s top 40 as a result, working his way back after a couple of years beset by injury issues.
Berrettini, ranked No 50, defeated Russian Pavel Kotov (7-6 (6), 7-6 (5)), Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the second seed (7-6 (4), 7-6 (5)), American wildcard Nicolas Moreno De Alboran (7-6 (5), 6-3) and German Yannick Hanfmann (6-4, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Kitzbuhel tournament, Gaston, ranked No 91, beat German Daniel Altmaier (6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4), Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, the No 7 seed (6-2, 7-6 (5)), Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the top seed (7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (6)) and Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta (6-1, 2-0 ret.).
