Fritz sees off in-form Baez to set date with Rune
Taylor Fritz beat Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-2 on Monday night and will face Dane Holger Rune, the No 7 seed, in the next round
American Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Indian Wells Masters by winning against Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 19 seed, 6-2, 6-2 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Monday night.
Heading into their third round clash, Baez had won 10 matches in a row, claiming title in Rio and Santiago over the past fortnight. However, the big serving (10 aces and 88 percent of first serve points won) and strong baseline game (16 winners to 10 unforced errors) of Fritz was enough to snap the Argentinian’s momentum in Indian Wells.
Fritz, ranked No 12, will play Dane Holger Rune, the No 7 seed, next.
The American defeated Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (7-6 (2), 6-2) ahead of his victory.
In the previous round of the Indian Wells Tennis Masters, Baez, ranked No 19, beat Italian wildcard Fabio Fognini (7-5, 6-3).
