Auger-Aliassime beats Wolf in Florence to win second ATP Tour title
Top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime clinched the first ever Florence Open title in style
Felix Auger-Aliassime doubled his career tally of ATP titles to two on Sunday as he beat American J.J. Wolf 6-4, 6-4 to lift the Florence Open trophy at the Palazzo Wanny.
After losing his first eight finals, Auger-Aliassime picked up his first title in Rotterdam earlier this year.
“It never gets old. Winning, it always feels like the first time,” Auger-Aliassime said in his on-court interview. “It’s so special to win, especially here. I had a fantastic week and it’s been amazing.”
Auger-Aliassime seventh in the ATP Race
The victory takes Auger-Aliassime’s record in finals to 2-9 and the win means he’s seventh in the ATP Race and in good position to claim one of the last-remaining places for the ATP Finals in Turin next month.
“Every final is tough, it’s the two best players of the week,” Auger-Aliassime said. “Of course you try to win more than you lose the finals and that’s why I came out here today ready to give everything. We had some very tough rallies in the second set, feeling tough physically. But you keep pushing, try to keep the level high.
“But there’s no magic. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but of course I’m really happy because I came here [as] the first seed. I was the favourite in all of my matches on paper. It’s never an easy position, so to come out and win my four matches with confidence and conviction, it’s really good for my confidence.”
Auger-Aliassime, ranked No 13, beat German Oscar Otte (6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-2), American Brandon Nakashima, the No 8 seed (6-3, 6-4) and Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 3 seed (6-2, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Florence.
Earlier in the tournament, Wolf, ranked No 75, beat Italian wildcard Francesco Maestrelli (4-6, 6-2, 6-1), No 4 seed Maxime Cressy (6-3, 6-4), Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the No 7 seed (3-6, 7-5, 6-1) and Swede qualifier Mikael Ymer (6-4, 6-4).
