Fernandez, Auger-Aliassime win Tennis Canada Player of the Year Honours
Fourth straight year that Fernndez has claimed the honour and third straight year for Auger-Aliassime
Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger-Aliassime have won the 2023 Tennis Canada Excellence Awards for Player of the Year and Singles Player of the Year in the women’s and men’s categories respectively.
Fernandez won the Women’s Player of the Year and Women’s Singles Player of the Year honours for the fourth year in a row. The former US Open runner-up won her third WTA singles title in Hong Kong, reached the final of the French Open doubles event, and led Canada to its first-ever Billie Jean King Cup title in 2023.
Fernandez was ecstatic to win the award, taking to social media to say that she feels she must be dreaming. “What a wild ride it’s been!! Massive thanks to the incredible souls who cast their votes and cheered me on every step of the way. Snagging Player of the Year and the BJK Finals Heart Award? Pinch me, I must be dreaming!!”
Auger-Aliassime was named Men’s Player of the Year and Men’s Singles Player of the Year for the third year in a row. The 23-year-old won the ATP Swiss Indoors for the second year in a row and was also part of Team World’s Laver Cup triumph.
Other winners included Gabriela Dabrowski and Vasek Pospisil for Doubles Player of the Year, Marina Stakusic and Gabriel Diallo for Most Improved Player of the Year, Nadia Lagaev and Keegan Rice for Junior Players of the Year, Rob Shaw for Wheelchair Tennis Player of the Year award and Natalia Lanucha for Most Improved Wheelchair Tennis Player of the Year.
