Federer confirms he will play Basel in October
The Swiss was born in Basel and is a 10-time champion at the Swiss Indoors held there every year
Roger Federer has confirmed that he will return to the ATP tournament tennis at his home event – the Swiss Indoors – in Basel in October.
Basel has been an incredibly happy hunting ground for Federer. He has won 10 of his 103 career singles titles in his city of birth and his 2019 title there has been the most recent one of his illustrious career.
Federer, who turns 41 years old in August, has not played since his quarter-final loss to Hubert Hurkacz at the Wimbledon Championships in 2021. Soon after, he announced he underwent a third surgical procedure on his right knee and has been out of action since.
Federer also committed to playing Laver Cup in September
Federer has already confirmed that he will play in the Laver Cup for Team Europe in London in September and Basel will be the first ATP event on his schedule after that.
While many have speculated whether the Swiss will be able pull off another comeback to top-flight tennis after such a long layoff in his early 40s, Federer has been raising his fans hopes with his recent updates on social media.
It remains to be seen of Federer adds any more events before the Laver Cup or after Basel to his schedule.
Federer remains tied in second place on the all-time list for most Majors won by a man in tennis history. The 20 Slams won by him and Novak Djokovic are one shy of the all-time mark held by Rafael Nadal, who owns 21 Majors.
Nadal and Djokovic will both have opportunities to add to their count at the French Open and Wimbledon, both of which the Swiss has said he will not play this year.
