European Open: Hanfmann fends off Thiem to make last eight

German Yannick Hanfmann, the No 5 seed, edged out Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the European Open at the Lotto Arena in Antwerp on Thursday evening.
Hanfmann, ranked No 56, will face Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, next.
The German won against Belgian qualifier Alexander Blockx (6-4, 7-6 (3)) in the previous round of the Antwerp Open.
In the previous round of the Antwerp Open, Thiem, ranked No 86, defeated Italian wildcard Luca Nardi (3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2).
