European Open: Gasquet advances to second round, saving three match points against Wawrinka

Frenchman Richard Gasquet edged out Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to advance to the second round of the European Open at the Lotto Arena in Antwerp on Monday evening.

Gasquet had to save three match points on his serve when Wawrinka lead 6-2, 6-5. “I was lucky tonight because he was the better player on the court until the match points”, Gasquet said after the match. Wawrinka also lead 3-1 in the third set.

Gasquet, ranked No 82 and aged 36, will face the winner of the match between Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, the No 7 seed, and Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker next.

Apart from his semi-final in Metz, Wawrinka, aged 37 and ranked 193, lost at the first round at seven of his latest eight events played.
