Emotional Coria tops Baez to reach Buenos Aires semis
Federico Coria won against Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-4 on Friday evening and will play Argentinian wildcard Facundo Diaz Acosta in the next round
Federico Coria continued his fine play on home soil on Friday, taking out No 5 seed Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the Argentina Open at Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on Friday evening.
The 31-year-old world No 106, younger brother to former Roland-Garros runner-up Guillermo Coria, improved to an impressive 9-10 lifetime against top 30 players on clay, and reached his fourth career semi-final on home soil (also 2021, 2023, 2024 Cordoba).
After he locked down the victory, he fell to his back on the clay, celebrating his moment in style.
“I can’t believe it, because Seba [Baez] is an amazing player,” Coria said. “I think I played my best tennis today, I am very happy and enjoying a lot playing here.
“I think in this moment in my life I am enjoying playing a lot playing in my country, in front of my people.”
Coria, ranked No 106, will play Argentinian wildcard Facundo Diaz Acosta next.
Federico Coria edged out Austrian Sebastian Ofner (7-5, 4-6, 7-5) and beat second seed Cameron Norrie (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Buenos Aires Open, Baez, ranked No 30, won against Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles (6-3, 6-3) and Italian Luciano Darderi (6-4, 7-5).
