Eastbourne Open: Cerundolo becomes just second Argentinian man since the creation of the ATP Tour to win grass-court title
Francisco Cerundolo won the trophy on Saturday against Tommy Paul.
Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 4 seed, edged out American Tommy Paul, the second seed, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to win the Eastbourne Open tournament at the Devonshire Park LAwn Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon.
Since the creation of the ATP Tour (1990), Cerundolo is only the second Argentinian to win a title on grass, following on from Javier Frana’s win in Notthingham in 1995.
Earlier in the tournament, Cerundolo, ranked No 19, beat Swiss qualifier Marc-Andrea Huesler (7-6 (2), 7-6 (5)), Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (6-2, 6-3) and American Mackenzie McDonald (2-6, 7-5, 6-2).
Paul, ranked No 17, defeated Argentinian Sebastian Baez (6-1, 7-6 (7)), J.J. Wolf (6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2)) and Frenchman Gregoire Barrere (6-4, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Eastbourne tournament.
