Djokovic v Sinner: the history

Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner have played each other eight times, most recently in the final of the Shanghai Masters in October 2024.

Sinner edged a high-quality final to draw level in the pair’s head-to-head, now currently tied at 4-4.

Prior to that, they last met at the beginning of the same year in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The Italian won to reach his first-ever Grand Slam final, ending a winning run in Melbourne for Djokovic that extended back to 2019. Indeed, the Serbian did not even have a break point in the match – the first time in a completed Grand Slam match that has ever happened for him.

The pair played twice at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals. Buoyed by a partisan home crowd in Turin, the Italian got his first-ever win over Djokovic, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2) in a touch over three hours – and said afterwards it was one of the best victories of his career thus far.

But Djokovic got his revenge, in the final, winning 6-3, 6-3 to win the ATP Finals for a record seventh time, extending his lead in the head-to-head to 4-1.

They also met twice at Wimbledon – with the Serb winning both encounters – and in Monte-Carlo, their first meeting, which was also won by Djokovic.

However, Less than a week after defeat in the final of the ATP Finals in 2023, Sinner got his revenge, beating Djokovic (and saving three match points) to level Italy’s Davis Cup semi-final against Serbia en route to helping his country win the title. This formed the first of three consecutive victories for Sinner that has now moved the pair level at four wins apiece.

How do Djokovic and Sinner compare at the same age?

Sinner has won two Grand Slam titles, the Australian Open when he was 22 and the US Open shortly after he turned 23. He broke into the Top 10 at the age of 20, in 2021, and became the first Italian world No 1 in PIF ATP Rankings history at age 22 in June 2024.

Djokovic reached the Top 10 of the rankings aged 19, and won his first Grand Slam at the 2008 Australian Open the following year when he was 20. Djokovic was also 23 when he eventually won his second Grand Slam title in Melbourne three years later. The Serb was 24 when he first ascended to world No 1.

Djokovic has won the most Grand Slam singles titles in men’s tennis history. He has the most wins against players ranked in the top 10, and he is the only man to win all nine Masters 1000 titles.

Sinner was 19 when he won the title in Washington – the only teenager to do so. He is also the youngest winner of the Shanghai Masters, having won the event at the age of 23.
