Djere fights off Faria in Santiago quarter-finals

Laslo Djere scraped past Jaime Faria in three tight sets on Friday in Santiago. Deere awaits either Francisco Cerundolo or Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the semi-finals.

Laslo Djere outlasted Portugal’s Jaime Faria 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the last four of the Chile Open at the Club Universidad Católica de San Carlos de Apoquindo in Santiago de Chile on Friday afternoon.

Djere, ranked No 103, will next play the winner of a match between top seed Francisco Cerundolo and No 5 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Earlier in the Santiago tournament, the Serb defeated Peruvian wild card Ignacio Buse (6-3, 6-4) and Spaniard Pedro Martinez, the No 4 seed (6-1, 6-4).

Faria’s run to the quarter-finals came against Italian Luciano Darderi, the No 8 seed (6-3, 6-4) and Brazilian qualifier Gustavo Heide (6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-4).
