Dimitrov headlines Winston-Salem Open draw; could meet Thiem in second round
The final lead-up event heading into the US Open kicks off in Winston-Salem next week with Dimitrov leading the field along with 3 former top 10 players
Former world No 3 Grigor Dimitrov, currently ranked 18th in the world, is the top seed in next week’s Winston-Salem Open but could face a former Grand Slam winner in his opening match.
All the top 16 seeds, including Dimitrov, have a bye in the first round of the 48-player Winston-Salem Open draw and the Bulgarian will the winner of the first round clash between American entrant J.J. Wolf and former US Open champion Dominic Thiem, also a wild card entrant.
Dimitrov also has the talented rising Brit Jack Draper, seeded 13th, as a potential third round clash.
Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp is seeded second in the draw, followed by Danish teen Holger Rune at No 3, American serve-and-volley specialist Maxime Cressy at No 4, Italian Lorenzo Musetti at No 5, Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili at No 6, Argentina’s Sebastian Baez at No 7 and Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas at No 8.
Former Top 10 players David Goffin, Fabio Fognini and Richard Gasquet are also in the draw as is Britain’s Kyle Edmund, who used his protected ranking to enter the draw.
American Frances Tiafoe pulled out of the tournament before the draw as the players make their final preparations before the US Open, which begins in New York on August 29.
