American Brandon Nakashima, the No 6 seed, won against Japanese qualifier James Kent Trotter 7-6 (2), 6-1 to reach the second round of the Delray Beach Open at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center on Monday.
Nakashima, ranked No 43, will play the winner of the match between Christopher Eubanks and wildcard Reilly Opelka next.
