Delray Beach Open: Marcos Giron battles past Mannarino for the second time in two weeks
Marcos Giron won against Adrian Mannarino 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-1 on Wednesday night and will play American wildcard Patrick Kypson in the next round
Marcos Giron continued his fine run of form against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino on Wednesday evening at the Delray Beach Open, the 30-year-old American battling past the world No 19 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-1 to move into the quarter-finals of the Delray Beach Open.
Just a few days ago, Giron clipped Mannarino’s wings in Dallas, handing the 35-year-old a 6-1, 6-3 trouncing.
Mannarino was closer today, but couldn’t match the 52nd-ranked American in the final set.
Giron has now won five of his last seven matches against Top 20 players – he will play American wildcard Patrick Kypson next.
“Mannarino is a brutal player to play against,” Giron said. “Top-20 player in the world, it’s epic, he inspires he, honestly, he’s 35 and he’s at his best ranking. It was brutal losing the second set in the breaker, but I just had to keep moving forward.
“I’m really happy with how I was able to improve throughout the match.”
In the previous round of the Delray Beach tournament, the American beat wildcard Emilio Nava (6-4, 7-6 (5)).
