Giron ends the dream of Pecotic, reaches Delray Beach quarter-finals
Marcos Giron won against Matija Pecotic 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday night. He’ll play Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, the No 4 seed, in the next round
The dream run of Croatia’s Matija Pecotic has come to an end – for now. The 33-year-old world No 784, a full-time Director of Capital Markets for a real estate finance firm during the day, became one of the more unlikely winners on the ATP Tour on Tuesday when he defeated Jack Sock on Tuesday in Florida for his first ATP win.
An alternate in the qualifying draw, Pecotic made the main draw with wins over Stefan Kozlov and Tennys Sandgren.
A day after winning his first ATP match, Pecotic was back in the office ahead of his round of 16 match.
But the world No 784 could not continue the fairy tale run against gritty American Marcos Giron on Wednesday, as the former NCAA standout advanced to the quarter-finals of the Delray Beach Open with a 6-3, 6-3 at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center on Wednesday night.
Giron, ranked No 55, will face Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, the No 4 seed, next.
The 29-year-old saved all three break points he faced and won 26 of 30 first-serve points against the Croatian.
In the previous round of the Delray Beach tournament, the American won against No 8 seed Ben Shelton (6-4, 6-4).
Matija Pecotic defeated American wildcard Jack Sock (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) during the first round of the Delray Beach tournament.
