Taylor Fritz sets all-American semi-final with McDonald at Delray Beach
Taylor Fritz beat Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (8), 6-4 on Friday and will play Mackenzie McDonald in the next round
American Taylor Fritz, the top seed, battled past Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (8), 6-4 to move into the last four of the Delray Beach Open at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center.
Fritz, ranked No 7, will face Mackenzie McDonald next.
He needed to work extremely hard in a close-fought, physical match against the 34-year-old Frenchman.
“Slow conditions out here so I knew it was never going to be easy – I was gonna have to work for a lot of points,” Fritz said.
“I felt good. There’s definitely been ups and downs in the fitness. I’ve had times where I can’t really train so I’m not super fit but I’ve had a lot of time recently where I’ve been able to put in work and I definitely feel like I’m feeling pretty fit. Tonight obviously it was very physical, it was super humid, but I felt very good.”
Fritz improves his lifetime head to head against Mannarino to 2-2. He has won the last two times the pair have played.
In the previous round of the Delray Beach tournament, the American defeated Ecuadorian Emilio Gomez (6-4, 6-3).
Mannarino, ranked No 59, edged out German Daniel Altmaier (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) and beat American J.J. Wolf, the No 9 seed (7-5, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
