Delray Beach Open: Another semi-final, and a career-high ranking, for Marcos Giron
Marcos Giron won against Patrick Kypson 6-4, 6-4 on Friday night. He’ll face the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the top seed, and Australian Rinky Hijikata in the next round
The good times keep rolling for 30-year-old American Marcos Giron. The former UCLA Bruin beat wildcard Patrick Kypson 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals of the Delray Beach Open at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center on Friday night.
“He’s playing awesome tennis,” Giron said. “I knew I had to bring it today. I’m really happy with how I performed. Point after point I kept at it. There were a lot of big moments there.”
Giron never faced a break point and engineered a break per set to derail the 24-year-old American, who was playing his first ATP quarter-final.
With the win Giron reaches back-to-back semi-finals for the first time in his career. He also played the semi-finals at last year’s Dallas Open, where he upset Frances Tiafoe and Adrian Mannarino before falling to Tommy Paul.
Starting the week at No 52, Giron has already jumped to 44 in the Pepperstone Live Rankings – he will eclipse his career-high of 49 when the new ATP rankings are released on Monday.
Giron will face the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the top seed, and Australian Rinky Hijikata next.
Ahead of his victory, Marcos Giron won against wildcard Emilio Nava (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 4 seed (6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-1).
Kypson, ranked No 155, defeated Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, the No 5 seed (6-4, 7-6 (3)) and Frenchman Constant Lestienne (6-4, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Delray Beach tournament.
