Croatia Open: Rublev knocks out Carabelli to snap four-match losing streak
Andrey Rublev beat Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-4, 7-5. He’ll face the winner of the match between Fabian Marozsan and Thiago Monteiro in the next round
Russian Andrey Rublev, the top seed, defeated Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-4, 7-5 to move into the last eight of the Croatia Open at the ITC Stella Maris in Umag.
Rublev, ranked No 9, will face the winner of the match between Hungarian Fabian Marozsan and Brazilian Thiago Monteiro next.
This was the Russian’s first win after four successive losses on the ATP Tour and his first since the French Open in May.
“I think it was a great match. I think it was a lot of good points. Ugo played really well,” Rublev said as quoted by the ATP Tour website. “I think at the end of the match he started to feel confidence, he started to hit even harder because he had nothing to lose. During the match he raised his level. I think it was a good performance from me, as well. I’m happy that I’m here, I’m happy that I won the match, and we’ll see what’s going to happen next.”
In the previous round of the Umag tournament, Ugo Carabelli, ranked No 96, won against Croat wildcard Luka Mikrut (6-2, 7-5).
