Alert – Croatia Open: Popyrin wins the tournament
Alexei Popyrin lifted the trophy on Sunday evening against Stan Wawrinka
Australian Alexei Popyrin edged out Swiss Stan Wawrinka, the No 6 seed, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 to win the Croatia Open final at the ITC Stella Maris in Umag on Sunday evening.
Popyrin, ranked No 90, defeated Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi (6-4, 7-5), Austrian Sebastian Ofner, the No 3 seed (6-4, 6-1), Croat wildcard Dino Prizmic (7-6 (2), 7-5) and Italian Matteo Arnaldi, the No 7 seed (6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Umag tournament.
Earlier in the tournament, Wawrinka, ranked No 72, beat Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic (6-3, 6-2), Argentinian Federico Coria (7-5, 6-1), Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, the No 4 seed (6-4, 7-5) and Italian Lorenzo Sonego, the second seed (6-3, 6-4).
