Italian Fabio Fognini reached the second round of the Croatia Open by beating Frenchman Luca Van Assche 6-4, 6-3 at the ITC Stella Maris in Umag.
Fognini, ranked No 70, will play lucky loser Chun-Hsin Tseng next.
