Cordoba Open: Schwartzman knocked out by qualifier Burruchaga in first round
Burruchaga to face German Yannick Hanfmann, the No 7 seed, in the next round
Qualifier Roman Andres Burruchaga edged out former top 10 player Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Cordoba Open at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes on Tuesday.
Burruchaga, ranked No 170, will next meet German Yannick Hanfmann, the No 7 seed, who defeated Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas in another first round clash.
This was Burruchaga’s debut on the main ATP Tour and also marked his first career win over a top 100 player.
With the loss, Schwartzman, now ranked No 117 in the world, has now lost three consecutive matches on tour, his record for the season currently at 1-3.
