Clutch Fonseca wins Phoenix Challenger for third title of 2025
The Brazilian teenager dropped just one set all tournament
Joao Fonseca beat Alexander Bublik to win the Phoenix Challenger in Arizona on Sunday, with the Brazilian teenager racing past the former world No 17 7-6(5), 7-6(0) for his third title of the season.
As is rapidly becoming his trademark, Fonseca played his best tennis under pressure, seeing off a myriad of aces from Bublik to win dual tiebreakers.
The 18-year-old is now 20-4 across all levels in 2025, and improves to No 62 in the live ATP rankings.
Earlier in the tournament – which Fonseca entered after losing first round at the Indian Wells Open to eventual champion Jack Draper – the Brazilian beat Pavel Kotov (6-2, 6-4), Jan-Lennard Struff (6-1, 4-6, 6-3), Hugo Gaston (6-4, 6-4) and Kei Nishikori (6-3, 6-3).
