Citi Open: Tiafoe into semi-finals, knocks out top seed Rublev
Frances Tiafoe won against Andrey Rublev 6-4, 7-6 (3) on Saturday night and will play American Sebastian Korda, the No 4 seed, in the next round
American Frances Tiafoe, the No 5 seed, moved into the semi-finals of the Citi Open by beating Russian Andrey Rublev, the top seed, 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington on Saturday night.
Tiafoe, ranked No 29, will play American Sebastian Korda, the No 4 seed, next.
The American won against Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan (6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-3) and Aleksandar Kovacevic (7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Rublev, ranked No 8, edged out Frenchman Luca Van Assche (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) and won against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, the No 16 seed (7-6 (4), 6-4).
