Citi Open: Tiafoe overcomes Galan in three sets to reach last 16
The American will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, the No 11 seed, and American Aleksandar Kovacevic in the next round
American Frances Tiafoe, the No 5 seed, won against Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-3 to move into the last 16 of the Citi Open.
Tiafoe, ranked No 29, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, the No 11 seed, and American Aleksandar Kovacevic at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center next.
“I was happy I stayed with it,” Tiafoe said as per the ATP Tour. “Early in the second, I was a little sloppy. I was pretty pissed I lost that first set. I kept holding it out, found a little spark there from midway in the second set to the end where I thought I played really well. The biggest thing was that I served great, a bunch of aces, a lot of free points. That helped me a lot.”
Galan, ranked No 124, defeated American qualifier Maxime Cressy (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the tournament.
