Citi Open: McDonald gets revenge on Schwartzman, advances to second round

American Mackenzie McDonald advanced to the second round of the Citi Open by winning against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-3 at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington on Monday evening.

The pair had met last month at Queen’s, where Schwartzman prevailed in straight sets. Not today, however, as McDonald played clean tennis on his home courts, striking 23 winners and only seven unforced errors.

For Schwartzman, it’s now an 18th loss of the year, having only won nine matches in 2023 and seeing his ranking plummet to No 90. Previously, the Argentinian has been as high as No 8 in the world.

McDonald, ranked No 60, will face No 5 seed Grigor Dimitrov next, who had a bye in his opening round.
