Citi Open: American Korda eliminates 12th seed Baez
Sebastian Korda won against Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-4 on Wednesday. He’ll play the winner of the match between Grigor Dimitrov, the No 5 seed, and Adrian Mannarino next
American Sebastian Korda advanced to the last 16 of the Citi Open with an upset win over Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 12 seed, at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington on Wednesday.
Korda won 6-1, 6-4 to advance and will play the winner of the match between Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 5 seed, and Frenchman Adrian Mannarino next.
The American said he has been feeling good after early losses in his last three tournaments.
“Slowly but surely it’s getting to where I want it to be”, Korda said. “I had a good first set in Atlanta last week. Unfortunately lost (against Daniel) but kind of just wasn’t physically ready to battle in the heat just yet, and just kind of getting my body ready to matches again. Just been feeling good on court, and hopefully I can just keep going.”
Korda, ranked No 54, had defeated Belarusian Ilya Ivashka 6-4, 7-6 (5) in his first round here.
