Cincinnati Masters: McDonald eases past Hanfmann to book Rune clash

American wildcard Mackenzie McDonald reached the second round of the Cincinnati Masters by winning against German Yannick Hanfmann 7-5, 6-1 at the Linder Tennis Family Center on Tuesday night.

McDonald was dominate on return, breaking Hanfmann’s serve six times and winning 45 percent of the German’s first serves. He also kept his side of the net error-free, conceding only a half dozen unforced errors across the two sets.

After losing eight matches in a row across May and June this year, Mackenzie McDonald is quietly having a very strong second half of the season. The American has already defeated two top 10 opponents in the past two months, and he’s now added back-to-back strong performances in Toronto and Cincinnati to his record.

McDonald, ranked No 43, will face No 6 seed Holger Rune next.
